“Girl Code: Unlocking the Secrets to Success, Sanity, and Happiness for the Female Entrepreneur” by Cara Alwill Leyba Book Review

GirlCode Book ReviewIf you’re starting your own business or brand, or perhaps just looking for some positive advice- this is your book! Cara Alwill Leyba is a life coach and blogger (The Champagne Diet) who encourages women to practice self-love and empower one another. I enjoyed her writing style because it almost feels as if we were having a conversation. Her book is filled with inspirational quotes and interviews from other successful female entrepreneurs.

Being fearless means facing your fears and reframing every situation as an opportunity to grow. Did you know “Harry Potter” was rejected 12 times before getting published? Did you know Oprah Winfrey was fired from her news reporting position because they felt she wasn’t good on TV? Did you know Marilyn Monroe was dropped by Twentieth Century-Fox because producers thought she was unattractive and couldn’t act? These are iconic women who have made history and their accomplishments will continue to live through many generations. Imagine if they had let a simple “no” stop them from pursuing their dreams. Let your passion drive you; failure is part of success. There’s a particular quote I really liked from J.K. Rowling, “It’s impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all- in which case, you fail by default.”

Living in today’s generation of social media, we subconsciously compare ourselves to others, but her success is NOT your failure. There’s enough for all of us. Take a couple minutes every morning before you get out of bed and meditate: envision what you want, believe in yourself, and clear up any negative thoughts. Oprah Winfrey says,“Create the highest, grandest vision possible for yourself because you become what you believe.”

Go where you are loved and celebrate the people who celebrate you. Just because someone has been in your life for a long time doesn’t mean they get a free pass to stay forever. Trust me, I’ve learned that the hard way. Truth be told, a friend who needs 101 chances to be “a friend” was never really your friend. It’s your life and energy, never give anyone the power to have a negative impact on either of those. Rise above and don’t speak poorly of others, even if they’re doing it to you. Remember, insecurity competes and confidence empowers. Your vibe attracts your tribe. 🙂

After every chapter there are note pages you can jot down your takeaways. I listed so many good quotes that I’d love to share with you all, but I don’t want to give away the whole book… that means you’re going to have to read it for yourself. Before closing this blog post, I’d like to share one more, “We all have the same hours in a day, it’s how you choose to spend them that counts.”

Feel free to share your takeaways with me.

XOXO,

Laura Saucedo
